With your EndNote library and word processing document both open, you can switch between the two files without closing either program.
To run both programs simultaneously in Windows:
Start EndNote by clicking the Windows Start button in the task bar, then select Programs, select EndNote, and pick EndNote Program. EndNote starts and prompts you to open your library. (To set a library to open automatically, see Setting a Default Library.
You can start your word processor in a similar fashion by clicking the Start button, selecting Program Files, and selecting the option for your word processor.
Once you have EndNote and your word processor running, you can switch between the two programs by clicking the task bar button along the bottom of the screen for the program you wish to use.
You can also press Alt+Tab to switch between the programs. If you are running more than just EndNote and your word processor, keep the Alt key pressed, and press the Tab key repeatedly to cycle through all open programs. When you see the name of the program you want, release both keys.
If an EndNote icon and your word processor icon appear on the Dock along the edge of the screen, click on the appropriate icon to start or switch to that program.
To start EndNote and open your EndNote library while working in your word processor:
Switch from your word processor to the Finder.
If the icon of your hard drive is visible on the right side of the screen, click once on your hard drive to return to the Macintosh finder.
Or, click on the Finder icon found on the dock along the edge of the screen.
Now that you are back in the Finder, locate your EndNote library and double-click it to open it in the EndNote program. Your EndNote library is probably in your EndNote folder, although it can be anywhere that you chose to put it.
At this point, you should have both your library and your word processing document open. You are now ready to copy and paste references from your EndNote library into your word processing document.
To switch between your word processor and EndNote when both are running:
Once both programs are running, an EndNote icon and your word processor icon appear on the Dock along the edge of the screen. Click on the appropriate icon to switch to that program.
Or, if you have minimized windows, click on the document which may be visible in the background.
Every time you click on your word processing document to paste a temporary citation, the EndNote library moves to the background behind your paper. You can rearrange or resize the windows for the EndNote library and the word processing document so that the EndNote library is not completely obscured by the word processing document every time you switch back to your word processor. With the windows set up this way, you can click on part of the EndNote Library window to bring it forward on the screen, and then click on the word processing document when you want to return to it.
